"Because you Matter" serves local people in need

Wanting to help the less fortunate, LifeGroup leaders Brett and Susan DeLawter started “Because You Matter,” an outreach ministry of Montrose Church, which assists the needy of Pasadena with food and clothing along with the simple gestures of a smile, a handshake and a hug that are too often missing from their lives.

Feeding over 300 people each month, Montrose Church volunteers provide the homeless at Pasadena’s Central Park with a barbeque dinner as well as sack lunches, clothing items, and personal hygiene kits. “We don’t just hand out food and put a pile of clothes out for everyone to grab,” says Brett DeLawter, “there is a sense of dignity and respect placed at the forefront of our efforts.”

because you matter

“Besides providing food, clothing and other necessities, it’s important to make a connection with these people, to simply ask how they’re doing, and build relationships,” adds Susan.

This past week during Vacation Bible School, over 200 children and youth got the chance to do just that - build relationships. They not only heard the stories of people like Domingo, who have been personally impacted by the ministry - they worked together to assemble care packages that will be distributed in the park on the last Saturday of this month.

The group is reaching out to our own community to help with this labor of love. All week, local residents have brought donations of tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, blankets clothing, socks and travel-size personal hygiene products. This Saturday, July 18, will be another dropoff day in the Montrose Church backlot (get directions).

It is difficult for me to put together a short narrative of what the "Because You Matter" ministry means to me. It really started when I became a believer in 2006 when I became a Christian. It is wonderful being a new creation in Christ, but I am just beginning to learn what growing up in my faith means. To summarize in more precise technical terms, I realized I was justified by faith, but did not know that I would be sanctified by faith also.
My brother David and I started shopping lifegroups last October and on our third try we met the DeLawters. I knew after the first meeting that this was the group we would stay with. We were asked to think about a ministry to do, and I was reluctant at first when we decided to feed the homeless. I had a history of trying different ministries and was not expecting this one to be anything special. On our first time to the park, we did much better than I expected, and was surprised by the people I met. They were warm and friendly-more so than many of the people that I work with. I was encouraged, but still not sure if this was what God wanted me to do. After the second outing, I had come to the conclusion that I would put my faith in God, and ask for His will to be done. I would no longer do this out of duty to Christ, but would instead do it by faith. After this, my experienced in this ministry rapidly changed. I began to talk to people and get to know their stories. We also added some new friends to our lifegroup. I began to better understand my daily bible readings because I was experiencing the words of 1 John 3:17, "If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need, but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?" With the experiences I have gained so far, I came to believe that the most effective way to help is to give faith in Christ, and He will deliver those who receive it. This is an obvious theme in the bible, but it really is brought home when you see it in action. I pray that soon this belief may be demonstrated to you with another story we hope to tell. Please pray for the ministry and all the people involved. I pray we will bring you stories that truly glorify God and bring tears of joy to your eyes. I look forward to reading other's stories of God's work on the MC blog ans well. We are God's instruments and when we work together we make a symphony. PS-this ministry is giving me momories that will give me joy for the rest of my life. I believe that this is the joy the scriptures decribe. I also realized that I am talking to the some people that Christ and the Apostles ministered to. If we are to follow in the footsteps of Christ as His apostles did, then we need to find the path. I firmly believe the Holy Spirit gives spiritual growth to anyone who tries, 1 Pet 2:2, "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation". PSS-One thing I have learned since we started this ministry is to never give up. Every failure gives you more knowledge and prepares you for success. I am still learning..........
