Here's a great story about serving with Summer Night Lights from Debbie & Chuck Middlebrook:
We have been attending Montrose Church for almost 2 years and love it! However, we live in Monrovia and feel we miss out on the community "atmosphere" that makes Montrose Church so special. A year ago when we heard about Summer Night Lights and how volunteers from our church community were involved, it sounded like something we would like to do but like so many activities or plans that we say we will do nothing ever happens. Well this summer when Kim Villa spoke about Summer Night Lights, we said, "okay, we'll at least go to the orientation meeting". This was a very easy thing to do. Listen to Kim, listen to Craig. We were not signing our life away! We just heard that all we need to do was be "a presence" at the park.
We stepped out of our comfort zone and decided to volunteer for Summer Night Lights. Nothing scary, not a lot of work, it is just a couple of hours of our time making a child smile, letting a parent know that they have great kids and seeing the pride on that parent's face. Easy, safe, fulfilling. We are at Hubert Humphrey Park on Friday nights, tired but fulfilled. Not by what we are doing but by the smiles on so many faces, children and adults. We put ourselves out there and it is a great feeling. Another bonus of this time, we are meeting more people from Montrose Church. Why did we wait so long to do this? If we can do it, you can to. Being a "presence" to these families will be a "blessing" to you! A win win situation.
