Advent Day 3: God’s Amazing Patience

Advent Day 3: God’s Amazing Patience

Today’s reading: 2 Peter 3:1-18

The New Testament letter called 2 Peter counsels us to be aware of the times in which we live and the faithfulness of God in them. However, promises made hundreds and hundreds of years ago seem to have gotten lost in the ebb and flow of life. This has led many to walk away from their faith and to embrace the ways and means of the world in which they live.

Patience is not a virtue found in the life of many people. If God doesn’t act on their schedule then apparently, to them, God is not significant any more. Maybe there is a tendency in all of us to believe this way. We want a “Johnny on the spot” God, and our impatience defines our relationship with God and reveals that we are more attuned to what we want than to what God wants. Never mind that God is “the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth” (The Apostle’s Creed), and that we are the works of His hand (See Isaiah 64:8).

Consequently, it seems we now live in cynical and pessimistic times in which those who do not believe in God have such a great power that their influence is found everywhere. Their desire to conquer anyone who thinks differently then they think is at the heart of their very being. Truth is, this is the kind of world in which we live, have lived, and always will live.

Thankfully, there is a group of people in the world who see through the facades, the action plans, and the endless attempts to undermine God and what God is doing in His world. This group of people live by the Word of God and in the power of His Holy Spirit. This group of people believe in Jesus Christ, Son of the living God. This group of people are not disturbed by those who seek to live by a way other than God’s way. This group of people will not be “carried away by the error of unprincipled men” (v. 17), but who live in their world with their eyes fixed on Jesus (See Hebrews 12:2).

This group of people are called followers of Jesus, and I am one of them. I trust in His Wonderful love.

Christ is the world’s true light, its Captain of salvation,

The Day-star clear and bright of every man and nation;

New life, new hope awakes, where’er men own his sway;

Freedom her bondage breaks, and night is turned to day.
